Miyazaki beef now enters the realm of Kobe beef and Saga beef, as a recognized brand of the highest grade of Wagyu.
Wagyu, of which the literal translation is ‘Japanese beef’ but specifically refers to four breeds of Japanese cattle (Japanese Black, Japanese Brown, Japanese Polled, Japanese Shorthorn), are now globally renowned as beef of the highest quality for its highly marbled meat that is tender and tasty, as well as being comparatively healthier than other beef due to its fat ratio and high CLA fatty acid content.
Held every five years and considered the Olympics for Wagyu, the National Competitive Exhibition of Wagyu is a contest to determine the best Wagyu in Japan. The latest contest was held in September of 2017 in Miyagi prefecture and Miyazaki beef was once again awarded the highest honors of the “Prime Minister’s Award”, making it three contests in a row since 2007 and undoubtedly becoming a champion brand in the Wagyu universe.
Miyazaki Wagyu has an especially high criteria to pass in order to be traded under that name. Origin and pedigree are vital aspects, and even cattle brought up at the same farm with the same method do not get automatically certified as Miyazaki Wagyu. Dedication and commitment of the producers are the reason for Miyazaki Wagyu being as good as it is and on top for over a decade and a half.
